Chesterfield Sofas or Buttoned Chesterfield Sofas are built using experienced craftsmen and
the finest quality materials. All frames are solid beech and hand finished.
Seats and
backs have double cone springs sewn to jute webbing throughout, fixed at the
waist and the top to maintain balance and support. A cane edge is formed to
stabilize the front of the seat, Hessian is then stitched in place and fixed
overall. The top cover is fixed and stitched over an insulation/padding of
rubberized hair and cotton felt prior to covering. All
materials conform to British Standard Regulations. We can arrange delivery with carriers. We at Acorn Antiques also
provide period Chesterfield Sofas and period Chesterfield Club Chairs when in stock as well
as Victorian Sofas, Leather Sofas, Leather Chairs, Howard Sofas, Chair and Stools, Antique
Sofas and Antique Chairs. We can also reproduce contemporary designs and
offer a bespoke furniture service. Email or ring to discuss your
requirements. The Chesterfield Sofa is a type of upholstered settee that first appeared in England in the early 19th century. The first fully upholstered and sprung sofa, the Chesterfield may have been named for the town of the same name in Derbyshire. More likely, it is named for one of the heads of the Stanhope family, an Earl of Chesterfield. (Four different men succeeded to the title in the latter half of the 19th Century.) The Sixth Earl of Chesterfield was a fashion setter, and a type of double breasted overcoat is named for him. The chesterfield has upright (as opposed to sloping) rolled arms that come up to the same height as the back of the sofa. Early Chesterfields were usually upholstered in leather, with button tufted backs. Fabric upholstery became common by the turn of the 20th Century. |
